Migrants: An Invisible Force in Central Asia

WINNERS

Established in 1951, IOM/The UN Migration Agency is the leading inter-governmental organization in the field of migration and works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. With 166 member states, a further 8 states holding observer status and offices in over 100 countries, IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants. More

WHO IS A MIGRANT?

A migrant is any person who is moving or has moved across an international border or within a State away from his/her habitual place of residence, regardless of (1) the person’s legal status; (2) whether the movement is voluntary or involuntary; (3) what the causes for the movement are; or (4) what the length of the stay is. IOM concerns itself with migrants and migration‐related issues and, in agreement with relevant States, with migrants who are in need of international migration services.

HOW MIGRANTS CONTRIBUTE TO DEVELOPMENT?

Migration and development are highly interdependent processes. International migration in the development context relates both to people who have chosen to move of their own accord, and forced migrants who can ultimately end up contributing to both their country of resettlement and possibly their country of origin if it is ever safe to return. Development, meanwhile, is a dynamic process implying growth, advancement, empowerment and progress, with the goal of increasing human capabilities, enlarging the scope of human choices, and creating a safe and secure environment where citizens can live with dignity and equality. In the development process, it is important that people’s productivity, creativity and choices are broadened, and that opportunities are created. Maximizing the positive relationship between migration and development has long been a focus of IOM’s work. It is especially relevant now, in this era of unprecedented mobility.

WHAT MIGRANTS BRING TO OUR SOCIETIES?

Migration is a dynamic process and is inevitable. It involves both counties of origin and countries of destination. Immigrants bring energy and innovation and host countries are enriched by cultural diversity. Young migrants enhance their life prospects and migrants bring new skills, savings and international contacts. It is clear that immigration can be beneficial for migrants and societies but only if their rights are protected while ensuring opportunities for people to mix and integrate properly.
